How to Stay Motivated to Workout: 3 Tips You Can Use Today

Last week I had a conversation with a friend who was feeling unmotivated to workout. She hasn’t been finding time to workout. And for that, she feels guilty. She has been feeling bad about her body. Her energy is low. She wants to get out of this rut and start to feel better. She can’t figure out why she can’t just get it together and stay motivated to workout.

Can you relate?

I hear from women in similar situations every week. And years ago, I felt this exact same way. I wanted to be fit, healthy, and confident. I wanted to take care of myself, but I just couldn’t stay consistent. I would start a workout routine and fall out within the first few weeks.

I would try to be strict with eating healthy, and then be “bad” on the weekends. Then I would beat myself up constantly. I figured I just didn’t have enough discipline, willpower, or whatever it takes to see results. But it turns out, I wasn’t the problem. And you aren’t the problem either.

The problem is our mindset and how we approach movement & healthy living.

Once I realized that I didn’t HAVE to spend hours at the gym each day, I didn’t HAVE to follow a plan perfectly, and I didn’t HAVE to be miserable in order to see results….my life changed.  You can love the way you move, look and feel without killing yourself. The best way to get there is through having the right mindset and actionable tools.

FINDING YOUR WHY
If you want to really stick with your goals, remind yourself why you set the goals in the first place. When you know what you want to achieve and why, it is so much easier to stick with it. Why do you want to work out and move? What are some reasons you want to get fit? How do you feel before and after moving? What can you improve and get better at? Get very clear about your “why” and your goals.

Yes, we all want to look good on the outside. But there has to be more than the external reasons if you want to stay motivated. How do you want to FEEL inside? Do you want to feel stronger, more confident, more at peace with your body? Losing weight or being skinny are not the best or most empowering goals we can set for ourselves. Once you embrace all the other good reasons for making movement a part of your life, your workouts will be transformed. For one, you’ll be a happier and healthier person who is taking care of herself. You’ll feel more connected to your body. You will also get: better moods, more body confidence, better health and wellbeing, less anxiety and stress.

My “why” is very simple. To feel my best, be more confident, and move my body because I love myself. (Not because I hate my body, and am comparing my body to other girls on Instagram) When I move, I am a much happier, calmer and confident person. YOU deserve to have your own best body, enjoy life with freedom, and feel truly healthy inside and out!

RESET YOUR MINDSET
If you’ve been wanting to improve your fitness, body image, and overall health, but haven’t been able to see the results you wanted, I’m guessing you’re doing one of these 4 things:

  • Believing that workouts must be long, exhausting, and sweaty in order to bring results.
  • Making it up as you go instead of following a clear, easy-to-follow plan.
  • Trying to do it alone…without support, guidance, and community.
  • Relying on self-hate (or shame) instead of self-love as a form of motivation.

If you’re making any of these mistakes, you will continue to feel stuck. Want to fix this? I’m here to help you get there more quickly than I did. It took me 4 years of trial and error, research, and studying movement and exercise science, to confidently be able to say that working out harder is not the only—or even the most effective—way to become the healthiest, happiest and strongest version of yourself.

Over the past few years I’ve helped hundreds of women love and make movement their lifestyle with my mindful, low-impact Pilates workouts. I have witnessed the most beautiful transformations in how they looked and felt about their bodies – stronger, leaner, calmer, healthier. SIMPLIFY YOUR WORKOUTS
Simplify your workouts and only do the things that brings you JOY. How can you simplify your workouts? Do you really enjoy what you are doing? Is your current fitness plan/gym membership working for you or against you? How are you feeling going into your workouts? Anxious or excited?

For example, I stopped doing high intensity workouts because I hated them. Instead I started doing more low impact workouts like yoga and Pilates. I created quick, effective, full body flows I could do at home under 30 minutes. Once I made this shift, everything got better!

  • I started to feel calmer, stronger and more confident in my body.
  • I was getting leaner and more toned than ever.
  • I was consistent and happy with my workouts.

These feelings became my motivation to exercise. When you love what you do, you do it more consistently. That’s when you see the results you want both in your body and mind. Have you found your best workout routine yet? What are your biggest problems around sticking to your workouts?
