Phone-Free Days in Haight Ashbury

Haight Ashbury
It’s the digital addiction that’s becoming harder and harder to kick: screen time. Whether you’re spending hours in front of a computer for work, or finding yourself on an endless scroll, we’re all looking for ways to limit our screen time. If you’re lucky enough to live in a neighborhood like Haight Ashbury, there are plenty of healthy distractions to make it easier to unplug and enjoy the world around you. We dare you to leave the phone at home while you discover (or re-discover) these neighborhood gems.

Get Groovy on 8-Wheels

Did you know that roller skating was once banned from Golden Gate park? The history of skating in Golden Gate Park goes back to the 19th century- isn’t it about time you got in the groove? If you don’t own a pair of skates, stop by Golden Gate Park & Skate to rent a pair before heading over to the Sunday Roller Disco Party. This weekly party takes place in the park at 6th Street, between Fulton Street and John F. Kennedy Drive. Want to learn from the pro’s? Take a trip to the Church of 8 Wheels on Saturdays for a lesson from the “SK8 Apostles”.

Dance Your Heart Out

Need another way to get your body moving in the Haight? Hop over to Lindy in the Park. This fun (and free) Lindy Hop event draws beginners and pro’s from all around the Bay Area. You can even participate in a free lesson and learn more about this evolving 1930s dance. For an iconic Haight Ashbury afternoon, check out the drum circle that takes place every weekend at Sharon Meadows, or “Hippie Hill”, at the East side of Golden Gate Park. This San Francisco tradition has lasted for decades and is worth a visit. Looking for something different? Visit the San Francisco Capoeira Center in Hayes Valley. This Brazilian art form combines dance and self-defense to inspire grace, strength, creativity, and balance through all facets of life. Or, if you’re looking for entertainment, check out a show by our neighbours at the locally-run Mark Foehringer Dance Project, or the Reach BC Dance group.

Rest Your Eyes & Treat Your Ears

There’s no shortage of amazing music around the Haight. Amoeba Music is a local institution, offering free weekly in-store shows. If you haven’t been there, mark this on your “to do” list immediately. You can get lost for hours, browsing the crates for new releases and vintage gems. For a night of live music, check out the listings at The Independent. Over the years, this legendary venue has hosted once up-and-coming acts like Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem, Bon Iver and Foster the People. Or, opt for a classy affair and soak up the live jazz playing seven nights a week at Club DeLuxe.

Haight Ashbury

The Haight is one of San Francisco’s most iconic and beautiful neighborhoods. It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of its painted houses, colorful characters, and cultural institutions. Quirky cafes and funky shops add even more fun to the mix. Step out and enjoy this cultural jewel in all of its glory, IRL for once.
